A black primer was used first. Then the tail section was sprayed with a black base coat for the stripe. Once the black base paint was run through the bake cycle in our paint booth it was masked off to create the stripe. Then the entire car was shot with the red base color and run through another bake cycle. We let it sit overnight, removed the masking for the stripe, and clear coated the entire car. This way the black stripe and the main red color have the same layer of clear coat over them both.
